The Heat4Cool testing will be performed in two different types of levels: building and district. The building level encompasses three buildings located in three different countries, whereas the district level will be represented by one district involving the use of communal wastewater. The first step of the testing will include the integration of the system in a testing facility designed especially for the testing of new energy efficiency solutions. The name of this infrastructure is KUBIK and it is located in Derio, Spain. The main characteristic of KUBIK is the capability to build realistic scenarios (residential, office, schools) to analyse the energy efficiency obtained from the holistic interaction of the constructive solution for the envelope, the intelligent management of the HVAC and lighting systems and the supply from renewable energy.
Building in Sofia, Bulgaria
This residential building is located in Boyana, a neighbourhood of the Bulgarian capital Sofia. The climate in Boyana is warm and temperate. The average annual temperature is 10,6 °C with about 600 mm of rainfalls annually. The building is a two-floor multi-family 6 apartment dwelling that was completed in 1974. In 2004, a new part was added to the building. Total floor area is 564 m2. In the new part, gas boilers provide hot water and space heating. In the old part separate electric boilers and heaters carry out these functions. Split air-conditioners are used for cooling in the summer. The common areas are heated with a gas heater. The annual final energy consumption related to the occupied apartments with a heated space of 336 m2 is 200 kWh/m2, of which 143 kWh/m2 from natural gas, 13 kWh/m2 from coal and 44 kWh/m2 from electricity. The annual heating and cooling demands are 117 kWh/m2 for space heating, 21 kWh/m2 for DHW and 58 kWh/m2 for space cooling.
Building in Valencia, Spain
This residential building is located in the city center of Valencia (Spain). It has a Suptropical Mediterranean climate with very mild winters and long warm to hot summers. The annual average temperature is 17.8 °C. The building was constructed in 2001. The building´s main façade is oriented to the west and is composed of a ground floor, which is assigned to commercial use, and 4 other floors, which are dedicated to residential use and comprise 12 flats for a total floor area of 610 m2. The building has a centralized natural gas boiler and there are no installed RES for heating or electricity. After retrofitting windows and envelope, the annual final energy consumption is 61 kWh/m2, of which 54 kWh/m2 from natural gas and 7 kWh/m2 from electricity. The annual heating and cooling demands are 23 kWh/m2 for space heating, 25 kWh/m2 for DHW and 22 kWh/m2 for space cooling.
Building in Chorzow, Poland
This residential building is located in Chorzow (Poland). Chorzow climate is cold and temperate, with yearly average 8.6°C The building was constructed in 1902, since then several improvements were introduced. The building is a multi-storey house with three commercial activities on the ground floor, 12 apartments on the other floors and a total floor area of 998 m2. The annual final energy consumption is 194 kWh/m2, of which 155 kWh/m2 from natural gas, 12 kWh/m2 from coal and 27 kWh/m2 from electricity. The annual heating demands are 111 kWh/m2 for space heating and 33 kWh/m2 for DHW.
District in Budapest, Hungary
The project includes the design and realization of a heat pump based Thermowatt system that would use communal wastewater to heat and cool buildings around the St. Stephan Square in Budapest District 4. The climate is humid subtropical with annual average temperature 11.2 °C. The expected wastewater temperature is 15-20°C and the available wastewater flow is about 250 m3/hour. Besides the already existing 1.7 MW Thermowatt system, a new 0.5 – 0.75 MW Thermowatt system is to be built and would serve three buldings with a total heated/cooled surface of 12 500 m2: the Mayor’s office (2 600 m2), the Government Window (1 900 m2) and the New Market Hall (8 000 m2, under construction). The annual final energy consumption is 274 kWh/m2, of which 197 kWh/m2 from natural gas and 77 kWh/m2 from electricity. The annual space heating and cooling demands are 178 kWh/m2 and 122 kWh/m2, respectively.
