The Heat4Cool project started in October 2016 and will run until September 2020 for a total of 48 months. After the kick-off meeting in Brussels, four progress meetings have been held during the first 24 months: Bilbao, Budapest, Milano and Katowice. The first project results have been presented during a public workshop at Expo Comfort 2018 in Rho Fiera Milan and another update on the project results will be provided at the ISH fair in Frankfurt on 12th March 2019.

The aim of the project is to develop and demonstrate integrated heating and cooling solutions complemented by heat pumps and renewable energy sources at both the building and district scale.

Design tool

A new, fast computing, on-line design tool has been developed for end-users, architects and manufacturers. The tool combines a set of HVAC technological solutions including RES and BEMS integration with data characteristic of real buildings and locations to predict the energy and economic performance of a variety of retrofitting solutions.

Heating and cooling at building scale

Two alternative solutions for retrofitting heating and cooling systems in buildings are foreseen:

1) Heating, cooling and domestic hot water complemented by adsorption chiller driven by solar thermal energy.  A new adsorption heat pump system integrated with an electrical heat pump for enhanced energy performances in cooling have been developed. This concept will be demonstrated in a multifamily residential building located in Valencia, Spain.

Solar assisted adsorption heat pump in Kubik. Installation of the equipment in the basement of the building.

2) Electrical heat pump driven by PV electricity and complemented by PCM storage for space heating and domestic hot water preparation  A new PCM storage device for integration with electrical heat pump driven by PV electricity has been developed. This concept will be demonstrated in two multifamily residential buildings in different climatic conditions: Chorzow, Poland and Sofia, Bulgaria.

Sunamp UniQ high energy density, high power density thermal storage units

This concept will be demonstrated in two multifamily residential buildings in different climatic conditions: Chorzow, Poland and Sofia, Bulgaria. Heating and cooling at district scale A heat pump system combined with sewage heat recovery is foreseen to supply heating and cooling to a district network. The crucial aspect of cleaning has been addressed by the new sewage heat exchanger system design.

Heating and cooling at district scale

A heat pump system combined with sewage heat recovery is foreseen to supply heating and cooling to a district network. The crucial aspect of cleaning has been addressed by the new sewage heat exchanger system design.

This concept will be demonstrated in a district network in Budapest, Hungary, which supplies heating and cooling to three public buildings.

Building Energy Management System

Comfort optimization and energy system management are crucial aspects of maximizing energy efficiency and economic benefits of heating and cooling systems based on RES. The software and communication architecture for a new Self-Correcting Intelligent Building Energy Management System (SCI-BEMS) has been developed.

During the next phase the project will focus on the design, installation and commissioning of three demonstrative systems at building scale and one demonstrative system at district scale respectively in Spain, Poland, Bulgaria and Hungary.
